Online Process for Apply New Pan Card
Open the official site — choose either Protean (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL: Protean/NSDL’s online PAN services or UTIITSL’s PAN page.
Select application type — pick “New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A)” (or Form 49AA for foreign citizens). Choose the applicant category (Individual) and title. The site will show a short information/token screen before the form.
Register / generate token — start the form and generate the temporary token. You can save and return to the form using this token before final submission.
Fill personal details — enter full name, date of birth, father’s/mother’s name (as required), email, mobile number, and communication address exactly as per documents. If you plan to use Aadhaar e-KYC, enter your Aadhaar number.
Choose paperless or physical mode
1. Paperless (e-KYC / e-Sign): you can complete e-KYC by Aadhaar OTP and e-Sign — no documents to courier.
2. Physical mode: upload scanned documents (photo, signature) but you will have to send physical copies or follow instructions to Protean/UTIITSL if required. Protean lists both options and when physical submission is needed.
Upload documents — upload scanned proof(s) as requested: Proof of Identity (POI), Proof of Address (POA), Proof of DOB, passport-size photograph, and signature (check the exact file-size/format rules on the portal). Aadhaar can serve for POI/POA/DOB where applicable.
Pay the fee — choose physical PAN or e-PAN and pay online (card/netbanking/UPI). Fees differ for Indian vs foreign communication addresses and for e-PAN vs physical. (Protean/NSDL and UTIITSL show current fee tables during payment.)
Aadhaar OTP / e-Sign (if chosen) — if you selected paperless e-KYC, enter the OTP received on your Aadhaar-linked mobile to complete e-verification/e-sign. This avoids sending hard copies.
Submit & note acknowledgement — after successful payment and verification you’ll get a 15-digit acknowledgement / token number. Save it — use this to track status.
Send physical documents (if required) — if you did not use paperless e-KYC/e-Sign, print the signed acknowledgement, affix photo(s), attach proof documents (as per checklist) and courier/post them to the address shown (Protean/UTIITSL processing centre). The portal tells you the exact documents and address.
Track application — use the acknowledgement/token number on the same portal (“Know Status”) to track processing. Typical timelines: e-PAN in a few days; physical PAN by post within ~10–15 days after documents/verification.
Receive PAN — you will get an e-PAN (PDF) on your email if e-PAN option/OTP was used; physical PAN card is mailed to communication address if requested. Keep e-PAN & acknowledgement safe for future reference.
